I have been obsessed with BB Cream lately. I've been seeing them on Korean celebrities and I just love the way they give them beautiful, even toned skin without making them look cakey or fake. I love the natural looking skin that comes from it. A German invention, BB creams are best described as a tinted moisturizer that evens out your skin tone as well as having other benefits such as skin whitening, anti-aging, etc. Recently, I have heard a lot of people asking me whether I believe BB creams are worth it or not.
First of all, sad to say, BB creams come in a limited colour range. Most brands carry only a few shades and they tend to be in the lighter end of the spectrum, which is perfect for pale girls like me, but for an African American woman looking for that dewy glow, it's not such good news. There are a few brands that do offer more tan skin tones, but I haven't found one that comes in a very dark skin tone as off yet. It's not all bad news though! I've been seeing more and more American and European companies delving into the realm of BB cream manufacturing, and this will probably result in a larger colour range in a while, just be patient! It's bound to come eventually.
BB creams come in all different forms from anti-aging to skin whitening to acne control, what have you. They allow you to feel less guilty about covering your skin up because your skin reaps benefits too! I know my sister definitely got a lot paler after using the Missha M Signature BB cream, and I love how moisturizing the BRTC Jasmine Water BB cream is. It all depends on what you want from your skin! BB creams offer a great alternative to the heavy, pore-clogging foundations we use daily. BB creams not only let your skin breathe, but also make your skin brighter, more even toned, and beautiful! Most BB creams have some sort of sun protection built into it, so you don't even have to put sunscreen on beforehand!
If you're looking to cover up dark scars or a lot of blemishes, BB cream is probably not for you. Although a lot of BB creams are buildable if you want to cover up the occasional blemish or two, it's main purpose is to have a sheer, light coverage for everyday use. In my experience, most BB creams are very sheer, with just enough coverage to leave you looking natural, but not enough to cover a cluster of pimples. On the other hand, Missha Perfect Cover is very heavy coverage, the best coverage in a BB cream I have seen, and may be heavy enough to cover your scars or blemishes without feeling heavy.
I personally love the BRTC Jasmine Water BB cream, but I may have a different skin type than you. I believe that you should shop around when looking for BB creams. I highly advise buying samples of different brands and shades before deciding to buy a full tube. I naively purchased a huge tube of Missha M Signature BB cream because my sister used it and she loved it, but was disappointed when I found out that it greyed my skin out a lot and caused me to break out.
As for the question that stemmed this article: yes, I do believe that BB creams are worth it. Just invest a good amount of time in finding the right one for you. What one person loves, you might hate. You should always do your research before buying makeup, and this is especially true for BB cream. I love BB cream and I think I'll keep using it for a good while.
I wish you good luck on your own skincare journey!
Best wishes,
Jennifer Fleming.
