Name: Ivy Boyd
Location: Des Moines, IA
Occupation: Freelance Makeup Artist and Executive Office Administrator
What's your makeup philosophy?
Don't be intimidated by makeup. It's not a tattoo! You can always wash it off and start over the next day.
Who inspires you most? Where do you find makeup inspiration? My husband inspires me most! He operates a small business and somehow manages to do it all with professionalism and excellence. For makeup inspiration, I love laying in bed at night checking out Instagram and Pinterest. There are so many talented people out there!
When you're not a freelance makeup artist or working on your blog, what are you doing?
It's rare if I'm not doing something makeup-related, so that means I'm probably sleeping. I live for concerts and festivals, taking naps with my cats, hanging with my husband, eating breakfast foods, painting, and just trying to chill out.
What's your favorite thing about blogging?
I can pour all my excitement into my blog and connect with other women who feel the same way. I love creating content and utilizing my creative skills via photo, video, graphic design, and makeup artistry.
What's in your handbag?
Embarrassment. Crumbs from granola bars, expired coupons, special bracelets I wear for motion sickness, countless bobby pins, and at least 5 different lip products at all times.
What staple items should every girl have in her makeup bag?
An eyelash curler, eye shadow primer, a holy grail foundation, a dark brown matte shadow.
Describe your happy place.
My happy place is my makeup room in my house. The morning sun is streaming in the window, I'm listening to music or watching Good Morning America, and drinking coffee while getting ready. That's pure nirvana for me.
Celebrity makeup artist crush?
My makeup icon is Pat McGrath. I've been a huge fan of her's for years. She can really do it all from beauty makeup to avant garde high fashion makeup.
What's your to-go makeup look?
If I don't want to think about it, I usually do a brown smoky eye, peachy cheeks and a berry lip color. When I'm in a rush, I grab products that are tried-and-true, not experimental or new.
What's one makeup trick that every girl should know?
Use a smudge brush with a dark shadow instead of liner. It's easier, faster, and softer looking!
What is the biggest makeup mistake you see girls make? What should they do differently?
I don't like the word "mistake" because it's really all just how you like to see yourself. However, I am especially bothered by a thick line of black liner on the bottom lash line with nothing to balance it out on top. This just visually drags your whole eye down.
What is your favorite kind of makeup to do and why?
I truly do enjoy it all but there's really nothing more fun than Halloween makeup. It's a magical time of year for a makeup artist. I love transforming myself and others into something we are not.
What do you love most about makeup? Why do you have such a passion for it? When did that start?
What I love most about makeup is the transformative nature of it. You can be whoever or whatever you want to be. You can feel better, badass, sexy, or feminine. It's really up to you. I love the sisterhood that is created within the beauty industry, too. I have loved makeup since I was little and used it for art supplies before I used it on my face, drawing in my sketchbook with samples.
How big is your makeup collection? How do you organize it?
It's big, but it's organized. I utilize a lot of IKEA products to store it. I have a drawer system that I have labeled each drawer with foundation, primers, palettes, etc. Oh, I also have a dedicated makeup room, which does help.
What is the best light for applying makeup?
Natural lighting is ideal. Sit facing a window for the best result. Early morning light can be harsh as can early evening.
How often should you clean out your makeup? Brushes?
Expiration dates are usually noted on makeup with a jar symbol noting how many months after opening you have. Brushes would be cleaned every 2 weeks ideally. If you use a beautyblender, you'll want to clean that after each use.
What's your favorite drugstore makeup brand for those of us ladies on a budget?
I'm a drugstore lover from way back! NYX makes affordable products that don't feel or look that way. I love L'Oreal for mascara, Maybelline's gel liner and cream shadows, Revlon's foundation and lip products. The Sonia Kashuk brushes at Target are also excellent brushes on a budget and really last when well-cared for!
What's your skincare philosophy? Is there a certain skincare brand you love?
I definitely believe in the power of retinol and retinoids. They do so much. I have had good luck with Philosophy and First Aid Beauty products and the Sephora Collection is nice and affordable.
Do you have a favorite makeup brand?
I celebrate all brands! I can probably name one stand-out product from every brand, and I don't like to limit myself by sticking to just one. There is nothing wrong with mixing brands. Each has its strengths.
What's your go-to lip color?
Buxom Full Bodied Lipstick in Swinger. If I had a signature color, it would be this. But let's be honest, my signature color is the color everything.
What made you start your blog?
I love makeup and beauty, and I needed a place to funnel all my ideas and enthusiasm. I also wanted something all of my own.
Cats or Dogs?
Both! I'm an animal freak but everyone knows I'm a pretty hardcore cat lady.
Best Advice you've received?
My mom always said "kill 'em with kindness," and I have to say, it definitely applies today when people are able to give instant feedback online!
What's your biggest accomplishment?
I haven't done it yet, but I sure am grateful for every thing I've had the opportunity to do so far!
Favorite place to travel?
Greece! I visited Katakalon, Rhodes, and Santorini. It is, by far, the most beautiful country I've ever visited. Plus there are cats everywhere! Win, win.
I'm addicted to… Marshmallow Peeps. And eyeshadow palettes.
