Get the Look: Emma Stone’s Colorful Smoky Shadow

Here’s how to get her most recent knockout look from the 2012 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

1. Apply a Foundation, Not a Mask
If your skin is one of your best features, don’t cover it up with a heavy matte foundation—choose one that provides coverage to even out redness, but allows skin’s natural radiance to shine through. Any foundation with the word “luminous” in the name lends a radiant look, but we especially like Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, which acts as a moisturizer and sheer foundation. Follow with a high-quality loose powder like Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder.

2. Enhance Eyes with Color
When wearing deep purples, greens, or blues, the trick is to use the shadow in moderation and pair it with the right lipstick. Start by applying a primer to keep the shadow in place (try Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer), then a flesh-toned shadow (whatever matches your skin) on the lid and crease. If you have green eyes and coloring like Emma, use a small eye shadow brush to apply a dark-blue metallic shadow like Estée Lauder Pure Color EyeShadow in Midnight Star to both the upper and lower lash line. Then wet an angled liner brush and use the same shadow to tightly line around the entire eye. For an even more intense look, line the inner rims of the eyes with a pencil liner like Estée Lauder Pure Color Intense Kajal Eyeliner in Blackened Sapphire. Finish with two coats of black mascara.

If you have blue eyes, look for metallic copper, gold, silver, or brown shadows. To complement brown eyes, go with greens, purples, and bronzes.

3. Stick to a Neutral Lip
Bright, colorful shadows call for a more subdued lip. Emma pairs her bright eyes well with an understated peachy-pink lipstick, like Maybelline Super Stay 14 Lipstick in Pout On Pink.
