We love Krysten Ritter. In an entertainment world full of peroxide, plumped-up wannabe surfer chicks, Krysten’s natural vampy style—highlighted by dark, dark hair and pale, pale skin—is so intriguing. (Attention Hollywood! Girls who have interesting, quirky looks can play lead roles, too, not just funny best friends!)
At the Los Angeles premiere of her new movie Life Happens, Krysten rocked her signature red carpet look, which is polished yet natural, and always centers on a bold-colored lip. “I was inspired by Krysten’s stark black and white dress, and I knew I wanted her makeup to be strong and modern,” her makeup artist Amy Nadine told InStyle. Here’s how to get it at home.
We’ve said it before…having soft, healthy skin starts with wearing a sunscreen with at least SPF 30, each and every day. For this red carpet, Amy evened out Krysten’s complexion with Dolce & Gabbana Powder Foundation ($66, Saks Fifth Avenue), which provides good coverage of imperfections without creating too much camera-unfriendly shine. Set foundation with a translucent loose powder (like Smashbox Photo Set Finishing Powder SPF 15, $28 at Smashbox.com) to keep the foundation in place.
2. Define and Blend
For a sharp, kohl-rimmed eye like Krysten’s, start by darkening and filling in brows (Try MAC Eye Brows, $15 at Maccosmetics.com). Next, sweep a shimmery cream shadow across the eye lids to act as a base for other shadow. We like Jouer Crème Eyeshadow in Chiffon ($20, Jouercosmetics.com), a soft, pearly eggshell color with a hint of pink. Pat it on with a cream shadow brush or your fingertips.
Start lining the eyes, using a soft, creamy eye pencil like Benefit BADgal Liner Waterpfoof Eye Pencil ($20, ULTA). Line the inner rims of the eyes, then softly line both the upper and lower lashine, smudging to blend. Use a small shadow brush to add a layer of black eye shadow over the liner, smudging further to blend (Try Stila Eye Shadow in Ebony, $18 at Stilacosmetics.com). Finish with two coats of black mascara, like Dior DiorShow Black Out Mascara ($25 at Sephora).
On her lips, Krysten is wearing Tarte LipSurgence in Spirited. ($24, ULTA) The matte stain gives a more natural flush of color than a super-shiny gloss or lipstick. The perfect finishing touch is a wash of a simple peachy-nude blush, like CoverGirl Cheekers Blush in Pretty Peach ($5 at drugstores).
3. Do a Five-Minute Blowout
Krysten’s hair looks fantastic, yet unfussy. If you’re hair is naturally straight, give it an extra oomph by working a heat-protecting styler (like Sally Hershberger Go With the Blow Thermal Styler, $13 at Folica.com) into damp hair and blow-drying with a round, natural-bristled brush for a little extra sleekness, shine, and volume.
