Though we know it’s not healthy, many of us still want to look like we’ve spent the day lounging in the sun. Luckily, with the help of bronzers we can look like sun-worshipers without damaging our skin. The staff at TotalBeauty.com reviews their favorite bronzing products for achieving a golden glow all year long.
Nars Highlightening/Bronzing Duo ($37)
“Many makeup artists recommend applying blush on cheeks after using bronzer to make a faux tan look more natural. That’s exactly why Nars Highlighting/Bronzing Blush Duo is a keeper, with bronzer/highlighter on one side and blush on the other. (No brush though; you’ll need your own). The powder formulas are shimmery enough to make skin glow, but not so much that they enhance flaws. And they offer medium coverage that won’t budge all day. Of the five shade options, my favorite combo is the universally flattering Orgasm/Laguna.”—Reviewed by Kristen, Senior Editor at TotalBeauty.com
Urban Decay Baked Bronzer ($24)
“The name of Urban Decay’s Baked Bronzer works on many levels. One, the powder is literally baked in an oven. Two, after a few swipes it looks like you’ve been baking in the sun. And three, the powder is infused with a chocolate smell reminiscent of baked brownies (yum). This undeniably cute product also performs well. The matte bronzer blends into skin easily, giving a natural-looking tan that lasts all day. For a more intense look, try wetting the powder.”—Reviewed by Sarah, Assistant Editor at Total Beauty.com
Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Makeup Mosaic Bronzer ($18)
“The multi-colored quality in the three shade options of Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Mosaic Bronzer makes it adaptable for many skin tones, including very fair-skinned girls like myself. One swirl of the hard-packed, pressed powder will give skin a touch of warmth that doesn’t look fake or cakey. This has a touch of shimmer so slight that it adds a subtle glow without making skin look too shiny—a big plus. It comes sans brush so use your own, preferably a soft blush brush for the most natural application.”—Reviewed by Kristen, Senior Editor at TotalBeauty.com
Physicians Formula Summer Eclipse Bronzing and Shimmery Face Powder ($11.95)
TotalBeauty.com rating: 8
“With the right brush (not included), Physicians Formula Summer Eclipse adds a warm, summer glow to any complexion. The reasonably priced, pressed powder comes in a palm-sized compact (no mirror) and combines sheer “tan” coverage with light gold shimmer. Ideal for sensitive skin, it’s great for adding sparkle, a touch of color and a bit of confidence on days when you don’t have time for a full face of makeup. (Darker skin types will notice the shimmer but likely not the color.) Comes in three shades, each with a different celestially themed design.”—Reviewed by Charli, Associate Editor at TotalBeauty.com
Lola Sand and Sun Bronzer ($35)
“The two colors in Lola Sand & Sun Bronzer let you decide just how bronze you want to be. Shimmer is very light (which can be good or bad depending on what you want), but the color goes on strong so you won’t need more than a few swipes. I found using too much of the darker shade made me a bit orange, but the lighter side toned it down. The best part? The product lasts all day so your tan won’t go down with the sun. (Brush not included).”—Reviewed by Sarah, Assistant Editor at Total Beauty.com
