I Got My Glitter On at Sephora’s XpresSpa Nail Studio

  • Sephora Manicure

Every Nail Studio has an iPad display where you can browse and choose from different pre-designed looks, from glitter to matte to gemstones to half-moons to hand-drawn designs. If you have the Sephora iPad app, you can even decide before you get to the store. Or just request something special—the nail techs on hand are totally capable of coming up with something on the fly.

Picking out my design made me feel like I was sixteen again, when I had acrylic nails that were regularly festooned with rhinestones. (Yeah, that happened.) But these are way cooler.

Most of the looks utilize Sephora by OPI polishes, and can be customized to use whatever color you want. Not to mention that there are literally dozens of other nail polish lines in the store with open testers. Just sayin’…

I chose a look called “Ombré” with a deep purple polish and gold glitter. First, my nail artist Jac applied the base polish, Westminster by Nails Inc.

Then she sponged on a coat of Sephora by OPI Blasted Gold, a micro-glitter crackle topcoat, and then a bit of Sephora by OPI Looks Like Rain Dear, which has slightly larger chunks of iridescent glitter.

Last was a layer of Sephora by OPI top coat.

Although the good folks at Sephora were kind enough to give me the first one on the house (you know, just like a crack dealer), the manicure I chose retails for $35. The cost varies depending on how complex the design is, whether it’s hand-drawn or pre-fabbed, and whether there are gemstones or other goodies involved. Most designs are in the $20-$30 range. If regular ol’ polish is your thing, a basic manicure is $15.

The finished product! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Sephora’s next venture is a quick hair-styling bar.
