How to Treat Acne-Prone Skin

Just because the awkward teens years are over doesn’t mean the issues we dealt with are. People with acne-prone skin can attest to this. Nearly 50 to 70 percent of adult women experience bouts of acne during hormonal changes in their adult years. Rather than hiding away like we did in our teen years, we’ve got a few tips for how to care for acne-prone skin.

Facial skin care isn't just about the type of skin care products you use, it also has to do with the steps in your current skin care routine. Not every person is the same when it comes to using facial skin care products, but there are steps you can take to ensure that your skin stays clear of embarrassing blemishes. According to dermatologist Dr. Ramzi Saad of the South Shore Skincare Center, even though people have different types and severities of acne, there are certain things that everybody should be doing for the best skin care for acne.

Daily Washing
If you’ve been dealing with acne since your teen years, your daily skin care routine has you rubbing and scrubbing away. All that motion may be sloughing away dead skin cells, but it can also be irritating your already sensitive skin. Saad suggests taking a less corrosive approach. “We recommend routine facial cleansing with soap free, oil-free cleanser,” says Saad. “They gently get rid of debris on the skin without irritating it.”

Exfoliating cleansers could be helpful every once in while, but the best way to treat a mean pimple is by being nice to it. Gentle cleansers work best for any skin type, but especially those that are prone to breakouts. If you know that your skin type is oily, dry, or sensitive, a gentle cleanser may be the ticket to keeping acne at bay. The best skin care products for acne are those containing salicylic acid or benzoyle peroxide. The active ingredient fights to clean the pores and dehydrate the inflamed skin.

Another tip from Saad is to pat your face dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing it vigorously. This will alleviate any irritation of the skin as well as diminish the exposure of pores to bacteria.

Keep Everything Clean
You are constantly using your hands to touch everyday items: your phone, keyboards, door handles. If you’re getting all touchy-feely with those items, then you’re also getting all touchy-feely with the bacteria they carry. Often times, you’re reaching up to touch your face with just after handling those items. Keeping your hands clean and away from your face is key to preventing bad bacteria from clogging your pores. Saad suggests cleaning your hands often and keep your face touching to a minimum.

It’s also helpful to be aware of your personal hygiene in general. If you’re using your hands, makeup tools, and towels on your skin, keeping those items clean and free of bacteria will lessen the chances of putting bacteria back on your skin. “If you’re using your hands or tools, reuse of those items puts bacteria back on the skin,” says Saad.

Best skin care practice is to use fresh towels, wash your hands, and when using makeup tools, clean them regularly to prevent the application of pore-clogging bacteria with your coveted concealer.

Conceal While Healing
Another must-do for acne-prone skin is using double-duty cosmetics. Using a concealer or foundation that covers the blemish while it also heals is helpful. This not only makes people feel better about how they look, but also aids in the healing process of pesky pimples. Mineral-based and noncomedogenic, or nonacnegenic makeup, is best for acne-prone skin because it won’t clog or irritate sensitive skin.

Because mineral-based makeup isn’t made with parabens, oils, preservatives, chemical dyes, or frangance, the makeup won’t irritate sensitive and acne-prone skin. Another upside to mineral makeup is that it acts as a sunscreen.

If you don’t want to opt for mineral makeup—largely because it doesn’t work well with dried skin spots—try a noncomedogenic or nonacnegenic foundation or concealer. Often times people will opt for oil-free makeup, but the key is finding makeup that contains healing ingredients like aloe vera extract, chamomiles flower extract,  jojoba seed oil, and tea tree extract to name a few. These non-clogging ingredients are natural healing agents as well as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds that create smoother looking skin.
