The 7 Things You Need to Get and Keep the Perfect Spray Tan

Make sure you prep properly for the appointment. Exfoliation is essential! I prefer a bar; I find liquid scrubs to be messy and frustrating. My pick is L’Occitane Almond Delicious Soap. It smells divine, polishes your skin and you can’t beat the price.

For face, I like Clarins One-Step Gentle Exfoliating Facial Cleanser. It's orange scented and perfect for sensitive skin. Don’t forget about your neck!

Make sure to slick on a good lip balm before your spray so the solution doesn’t stick to your pucker. I like Kiss My Face Sliced Peach Lip Balm. These are cheap enough to buy a few and toss one in each handbag!

If a technician is airbrushing you, wear what makes you comfortable. Many salons provide disposable underwear but it’s always a good bet to bring your own – just in case. I like Victoria’s Secret PINK Cotton V-string Panty in black. It’s comfortable and keeps tan lines to a minimum.

The key to maintaining your color is consistent moisturizing. One of my favorite salons, Brazil Bronze Glow Bar, makes a glow stretcher lotion that helps extend the life of your tan. It’s a bit pricey so I use it sparingly – every other day, and mostly on my legs and décolletage.

It’s important to keep your face and neck, where the skin is thin, extra hydrated. I slather on First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream pre-makeup and before I get into bed. I usually use moisturizer only in the morning but I find the extra PM application makes a huge difference post-tan.

Once your spray tan inevitably fades to the point of no return, make sure your exfoliator has a good partner in crime to get rid of any lingering dark spots. Burt’s Bee’s Facial Cleansing Towelettes used in the shower can go far beyond the face and are great for removing excess color. These also work well as a ‘mistake eraser’ for all you self-tanners trying your luck with at-home color!

Your faux glow is like most other things in life: if you are good to it, it will be good to you. Happy tanning!
