Christmas in November

Okay, I’ve had enough. I’m usually a pretty calm person. I don’t get upset when dogs do their business in my yard; I keep my cool when the kids dump orange juice all over the kitchen floor. But the other day, I heard something that just about made me blow my top.

I was driving my youngest child to the grocery store when I tuned into my favorite radio station. I’m not ashamed to admit that it’s a station that plays country music. But instead of being soothed by the vocal stylings of Carrie Underwood or Brad Paisley, I heard “Jingle Bells.” Yep, you guessed it. My beloved country station had gone totally and completely HOLIDAY. It was November 1st.

What crazy idiot actually thinks any of us want to hear Christmas music the day after Halloween? For crying out loud, the candle wax in my jack-o-lanterns hadn’t even hardened yet! I was still picking candy corn out of my teeth, and my radio was telling me to have a “Holly Jolly Christmas!” What a load of garbage. And then, I walked into Wal-Mart and heard even more holiday cheer being piped in over the loudspeaker. I almost screamed.

Please don’t get me wrong. I am all for Christmas music that lends a little extra merriment throughout the holidays. I belt out “Joy to the World” with the rest of them. I even enjoy putting up my Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving. But this premature celebration of Jesus’s birth has got to stop. Please let our children wake up from their candy comas and NOT be bombarded with thoughts of white Christmases. I want to enjoy the actual holiday of Thanksgiving without being reminded that Christmas is just around the corner.

And STOP with the decorating already! The malls are already erecting their Santa houses and fake Christmas fire hazards. I know the month of December goes by fast, but please don’t put this stuff up yet. It doesn’t get me in the mood for Christmas—it just ticks me off. Wait until after Thanksgiving, or if you can’t, please just give us two weeks in November of normalcy. I don’t want to celebrate Thankschristmagiving. Christmas will come soon enough.

So my favorite radio station has been eliminated from my presets. It will be added again when I feel it’s appropriate to “Deck the Halls.” And to all of you … have a happy and wonderful Thanksgiving.
