Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz, Olivia Wilde and Tao Ruspoli, Tony Hawk and Lhotse Merriam—unexpected divorces seem to be the latest trend in Hollywood. With every announcement that a high-profile couple is splitting up (the above three were announced all in one week), our belief in long-lasting love takes a depressing hit.
But there is a small glimmer of hope, and it’s represented by the celebrities who’ve stayed strong through the roller coaster that is a Hollywood marriage. If love can prevail for them, then average couples have a shot at lasting unions, too. That’s why we look to the following five couples for love inspiration.
John Travolta and Kelly Preston: 19 years
John Travolta and Kelly Preston met in 1989 while filming The Experts and were married two years later. They have a ten-year-old daughter, Ella Beau, and just welcomed baby Benjamin in November 2010. Unfortunately, they lost their oldest son, Jett, two years ago when the sixteen-year-old suffered a seizure while on vacation, but the couple remains strong and dedicated to their family.
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick: 22 years
After playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, one knows just how many Hollywood women Bacon has worked with, but he’s remained true to wife Kyra Sedgwick ever since the two met on the set of the TV show Lemon Sky and later married in 1988. They have two kids, Travis, twenty-one, and Sosie, eighteen, and still walk the red carpet arm in arm.
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson: 22 years
Wilson isn’t just the name of Tom Hanks’s beloved volleyball in Castaway—it’s also the maiden name of his wife of twenty-two years, Rita Wilson. Just one year after splitting from his first wife, Samantha Lewes, Hanks and Wilson married in a spring wedding, forming a power Hollywood couple. They’ve starred in and produced a number of movies together, and have two sons, Chester and Truman (Hanks also has two children with Lewes).
Denzel Washington and Pauletta Washington: 27 years
The badass action star met the future mother of his four children while filming the made-for-TV movie Wilma, in 1977. They were married in 1983, and renewed their vows in 1995. We wonder if they’ll renew them again on their thirtieth wedding anniversary?!
Sir Sean Connery and Lady Micheline Roquebrune: 35 years
Sir Sean Connery’s first marriage to Diane Cilento may have ended in divorce, but the legendary actor found his long-lasting other half in Lady Micheline Roquebrune. The two were married in May 1975, and although they don’t have any children together (Connery and Cilento had a son), they’ve been together ever since! See? There’s hope after all!
