Selfie DOs & DON'Ts You Need to Know

Photo and video sharing is bigger than ever thanks to social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Chances are you've probably even taken a selfie or two (hundred). If you want to know how to take a selfie, follow these 16 dos and don'ts to ensure that you look your very best.
  • Do: Keep It Natural

    Follow in Lauren Conrad’s selfie footsteps and keep your pictures natural. No fake overposing, please. Your followers want to have a peek into your day-to-day life to be able to relate to you. So stop posting selfies when you’re all done up. We’ve seen that face a few too many times.

  • Do: Pop Your Arm

    We're all self-conscious about side arm. Create slim yet defined limbs with a simple arm pop. Whether you put your hand on your hip or slightly bend your elbow, gravity will create the slimmer-looking arm, shoulder and side you crave. Blogger Aimee Song's shot is a great example of this tip.

  • Do: Pick Well-Lit Areas

    When it comes to photography, light is everything. Shea of the blog Peace Love Shea was awarded the title of “Best Selfies” of the year by WhoWhatWear.com. She won because of her ability to use bright natural light in her photos. To take beautiful photos, stand outside or next to a window to give your selfie a soft, natural look. This also helps eliminate unflattering dark shadows. Try to avoid using your flash at all times.

  • Don't: Duck Face

    Don’t get us wrong, we love Lea Michelle, but these duck lips are a little too quacky for us. Most duck faces are meant to show off your cheeks, but honestly, it looks like you’re trying a little too hard. Instead “smize” (smile with your eyes as Tyra says) or try more of a kiss face like top model Karlie Kloss.

  • Do: Know Your Angles

    Style guru Rachel of Pink Peonies does a great job of taking selfies that flatter her face. It's important to know your angles. Bad sides are inevitable, so do your best to show off what you like best. We suggest taking your selfie a little above eye level with your head slightly tilted to one side. That way your chin and cheek bone are visible, ensuring a slimming angle.

  • Don't: Be Obsessed with Yourself

    Dear Nicki, we know you love your body and we do, too, but is it really necessary to post 29 pictures of the same scandalous outfit in a row? Follow the Selfie Rule: Don't post more than two to three pictures in the same outfit and your followers won't lose interest. And for the love of all things celestial, please stay away from nipple stickers.

  • Do: Use Cool Backgrounds

    Make sure to stage your photos to create eye-catching selfies. Julia of the blog Gal Meets Glam always does a great job of including a fun and appealing background to complement her photo. It's an easy way for your followers to get an inside view of where you are or what you're doing.

  • Don't: Post Skin-Showing Pictures

    Biebs, we know: You hit puberty. Congrats, but put a shirt on. Constantly posting skin-baring selfies is a serious cry for attention. Keep it G-Rated. The occasional vacation picture is okay, but there's a fine line. Beware of crossing it.

  • Do: Add a Filter

    Filters are a yes. Reality television star Kendall Jenner uses filters to enrich her photos. Filters are a fun and easy way to improve a photo, soften your look, hide forehead shine and enhance picture color.

  • Don't: Post Sexual Food-Stagrams

    Posting suggestive pictures with food is a no-no. We understand that Chiara of The Blonde Salad is sponsored by Magnum Ice Cream, but we know you did not eat that and also, it's plain weird. Keep your food pictures normal. There's no need to look like you're about to pounce on your chocolate bar.

  • Do: Turtle Your Neck

    Pro photographer Nigel Barker says his number-one tip for selfie success is the Turtle. Never hold your phone far above your head to hide a double chin. Holding your phone above your head and causing disproportion makes you actually look heavier than you are. Instead, try "the turtle." Lift your chin to the ceiling for about 10 seconds. You should feel the muscles in your neck stretch and tighten. Then you have about five seconds to lower your chin to one side and snap a picture. Victoria Secret model Candice Swanepoel definitely takes advantage of this tip.

  • Don't: Take a Selfie In Inappropriate Places

    Posting selfies at a funeral, in a bathroom or in a tanning bed is a major hell no. It’s OK to show off your gym body, but we’re a little too distracted by the toilet behind you to even notice. Gross.

  • Do: Messy Hair

    Rachel of That's Chic is our go-to girl for messy-hair selfies. Looking prim and proper all the time is boring, so make sure to amp up your sex appeal every once in a while with a messy-hair selfie.
