Of all the people to NOT see the importance of percussion in our family was my Dad, who himself was a drummer in a band. Yep, idk if it was a do better than me or “do as I say not as I do” type of thing. I wanted to play percussion in band so bad, but truthfully it wasn’t the instrument for me. I can’t keep a beat to save my life. I must count each note, each rest and work at paying attention.
I was waiting for my daughter today (I’m her personal chauffeur) and I was listening to different bands, and Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk came on. I thought about little Stevie Nicks striking a triangle or planing a tambourine. No matter how small it’s important, just as each person in a band is important because alone they can’t produce that sound.
Listening to a few other songs I could hear the beat of a base drum. That boom boom boom sets the pace for a song. Whether it be too fast or too slow you best keep up or the drummer will leave you behind. Their tempo sets the beat, the mood, and keeps everyone on track.
