Nora Ephron's Greatest Wisdom
Nora Ephron became one of the most revered women in the entertainment industry for her ability to create strong, complex female characters and pen snappy dialogue for romantic comedy greats like When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and Julie and Julia. While she lost her battle with blood cancer on Tuesday, she’s immortalized in the funny, poignant wisdom she’s left behind in her books and movies.
On a personal note, Nora Ephron has long been one of my favorite writers—and a woman I’ve harbored a serious girl-crush for ever since I read her book of essays Crazy Salad. As soon as I finished, I switched my major to journalism and women’s studies in a futile attempt to be her. I also have an embarrassing, incredibly vain fantasy about running into her and recruiting her as my mentor. In my delusional mind, I’m seated next to Nora on a long flight, and amazingly I’m able to say something smart and witty that doesn’t freak her out and we get to chatting and mutually realize we are a sort of kindred spirits. Unfortunately, reciting her dialogue as my well-worn VHS of When Harry Met Sally plays for the gajillionth time (no exaggeration) will have to suffice.
