Ode to a Coach

Hi, there, Coach!  What do you say!
I heard we’re having a game today.
Must have missed your call, but that’s okay.
I’m suited; I’m warmed-up and ready to play.
You say I can’t start?  Well, that’s okay
I’ll wait for my turn anyway.
Those starters missed practice, but I know
that’s the way these things go.
I’ll cheer; I’ll yell; I’ll boost the team.
Getting to play would be my dream.
It’s halftime now; will I get my turn?
I’ve got lots of heart and energy to burn.
O.K., I’ll wait; I understand.
Just let me know when I can lend a hand.
The players are tired; they need a break.
Any time you’ll give me, I’m willing to take.
There’s the whistle now; the game is done.
You’re asking me if I had fun?
I went to practice; I did what you asked.
Why is it that I am always picked last?
When I’m old and feeble, wrinkled and gray,
I’ll look back and remember today.
Remember the win?  No sir, no way.
I’ll remember that I never got to play.
You’ll remember only those who scored.
You’ll forget about me—the kid you ignored.
