Ouija: The Movie?

So … we’ve seen some pretty interesting concepts work their ways through the pipelines to land on the screens in front of our overcharged faces. The awesome and much-adored game Battleship—yup, that’s making its way (Oy)! But for right now—I’d like to focus your attentions to the (can you even call it a game?) Ouija board. Oh, that’s right—they are making a movie about the Ouija board. Ummmm …

Below are a couple links to some articles about the project. The first one really caught my attention thanks to its title and date of publication. On February 2, 2009 (that’s right—almost two years ago): “Producer Brad Fuller Says Ouija Board Movie Will Be a Big, Pirates-of-the-Caribbean-Like Adventure.” (Anyone else chuckling painfully upon reading this?!)

Then, in the second article written only days ago on January 4, 2011 (which announces that McG has apparently won the race for the director’s chair), it seems as though the script is still on shaky ground. I’m shocked to hear that problems have been encountered trying to make the Ouija board an entire feature big-budget film.

You know, they say that the flick will be going in more of an Indiana Jones kind of direction, instead of focusing on things supernatural and more creepy. Doesn’t that kind of go against the whole point of the Ouija board? Or entirely go against it? So, whatever feature length story is extrapolated from the game has its roots tethered to a foundation that is not directly connected to the point of the game itself? I’m a bit confused. But I don’t think I’m the only one …

So, a board game that leads to an adventure of discovery in the same vein as Indiana Jones. Jumanji Two, anybody? Only it can’t possibly be anywhere near as cool as the Jumanji board game, because the Ouija board is not.

Are we really this tapped for material, Hollywood? Oy …

With passion and gratitude,
