Aided by the brilliant directing of Martin Scorsese, this movie progresses from scene to scene utilizing light and shadows to create moods or intensify them.
The acting, directing and lighting emphasize a well-written screenplay, in itself too often a novelty.
Although I have not seen enough films in the past few years that I considered imaginative and worthy of many accolades, I believe this is one that deserves high praise for numerous reasons. It is not suitable for children but it is sure to be a multiple winner at next year’s Academy Awards.
