1. Get a Real Tree.
You don’t have to be God-fearing to enjoy the fresh scent and festive ambience of a Christmas tree. Many of my Jewish friends still celebrate Hanukkah, but get a tree because they enjoy the holiday vibe.
2. Create a Holiday Playlist
Just the process of going through samples of your favorite holiday tunes will instantly put you in a playful mood. Next time you have friends over for vino, play “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” It’s a classic.
3. Bake Gingerbread Cookies
The scent of ginger and cinnamon alone will alone will make your house feel warm and cozy. Invite friends over to decorate cookies over glasses of mulled wine. See who can get most creative with their icing and sprinkle skills.
4. Check out Light Displays
If you live in the ’burbs, take a drive at night to check out the decked out houses around town. Make sure to have your holiday music playlist spinning as you take in the sights.
5. Watch Cheesy Holiday Shows
Starting December 1st, ABC Family offers twenty-five days of Christmas where they broadcast a new holiday special at 8 p.m. every night. They mix the classics (Rudolph) with modern movies (Elf) so there’s something for everyone.
6. Donate to a Charity
What better way to get immerse yourself into the season of giving than by actually doing so. Pick you favorite charity and give 10% of your income back this month rather than waiting for tax time. It’s more fun to give when spirits are high.
7. Send Holiday Cards
Relive the long lost art of letter writing and send a personal little note to friends and family. Do it early so that within a week or two you will receive a flood of holiday cards in return. Isn’t it nice to open the mailbox and find love rather than bills?
8. Burn Holiday-Themed Scented Candles
Shelf the high end Volupsa and Votivo and opt for the mid range Yankee Candle Christmas Tree or Illuminations Pumpkin Pie scents. They smell delectably close to the real thing and provide an instant cozifier.
9. Indulge with Holiday Bevvies
I admit it, I drink Bailey’s. But only between December 1st and the 25th. It’s a tasty holiday dessert drink that gets me in the mood. Same with spiced cider or gluwine. I leave eggnog off the list unless it’s a skim Starbucks latte.
Last but not least, use this time of the year to give like crazy. Give give compliments, spread joy, give of yourself in any way you can. The feeling is contagious. That’s why they call it holiday spirit—no go on and get yours!
