What She Said

When I was just sixteen, in high school yet,
my mother’s sister, Lillian, my aunt,
said something to me I could not forget;
and even after all these years, I can’t.

My favorite person in the universe,
I prized each moment that she spent with me;
I’d tell her everything when we’d converse,
I’d hang on every word so eagerly.

She gave me good advice and understood,
the tribulations of the age sixteen;
she helped me past the multitudes of should,
and all the gradations that fall between.

Then she said I’d be fat like her one day;
did that sweep all her other words away?
