Back-to-School Basics: Stylish Looks for Hitting the Books

  • Brown Messenger Bag

Sling a brown messenger bag over your shoulder, and you are out the door in style. Once again, this piece is so versatile it works with everything. I love the look of Cara Loren's worn leather bag—the ideal school bag!

  • Kimono

Kimonos are my absolute favorite piece to cover up with. They come in all different patterns and fabrics, and look flattering on everyone. I love layering, so this piece works with many outfits. Throw it on over your black skinny jeans with a simple tank, and you have a completely cool school look.

  • Sundress

There is nothing better than a simple floral sundress, like Mary's from Happily Grey. Grunge it up with a flannel or dress it up with a leather jacket. This basic should be a staple in every back-to-school wardrobe.

  • Black Skinny Jeans

Black skinny jeans can be worn all year long and can be paired with anything. Black jeans match everything, and they are slimming and flattering for any body shape. Cara Loren looks comfy and chic.

  • Cardigan

When you are running out the door, a cardigan is easy to grab. Take a note from Christine of Hello Fashion Blog to keep warm and stay chic this school year. You never know how cold it will be in those classrooms!

  • Boyfriend Shorts

Although short shorts are fun sometimes, Julie of Sincerely Jules opts for destroyed denim shorts in a classic cut as a modest alternative. You'll look pulled together and effortlessly chic.

  • White Blazer

Everyone needs a classic, tailored blazer in her wardrobe. Dress this jacket up with some black skinny jeans or with your distressed boyfriend shorts for an easy, put-together outfit, like Jennifer's from Native Fox.

  • Graphic Tee

This back-to-school basic is perfect for days when you don't know what to wear. Throw this on with some boyfriend jeans, and you won't be late for class! Plus, we love the playful print of the skinnies worn here by Amber from Barefoot Blonde.

  • Flannel

Let's take it back to the '90s with this back-to-school basic. Tie a classic red flannel around your waist, as Ivana of Ivanarevic does here, for a layered look, or wear it for warmth. This is one of my all-time favorite separates. I think I'll always have one in my closet.

  • Distressed Denim

Let's be honest. Distressed denim has come a long way since the grunge days. Jade from A Spoonful of Style dons destroyed pants as a chic alternative to traditional blue jeans. They add character to any outfit. I love wearing mine with a comfy graphic tee and a flannel top.

  • Denim Button-Up

This is a great alternative for all those anti-flannel people out there. Pop a denim button-up on over a sundress, as Julia from Gal Meets Glam does here, or pair it with boyfriend shorts. I love the effortlessly chic look this piece gives. And sometimes it's just the perfect finishing touch to your outfit!
