How to Pull Off Neon Without Paying Homage to the ’80s

Wearing neon in a modern way can be tricky. You don’t want to look like you’re living in a past decade, but neon can be a fun, seasonal way to punch up your everyday neutrals. Here are three ways that even the tamest color novice can add a little Day-Glo to her wardrobe.

1. Cuff Bracelet

Less commitment than a statement necklace but enough surface area to be a little bold, a plastic cuff in a neon color can add personality to your day or evening outfits without breaking the bank.

2. Simple Tank

With all the cardigans, denim jackets, and boyfriend blazers you’ll be wearing on weekdays this spring and summer, why not add a little personality to that same silhouette with a neon tank? It’ll look equally appropriate with dark skinny jeans or a pair of white denim.

3. Beach Cover-up

If there’s anywhere you can take a fashion risk, the beach is definitely high on the list. Get loose-fitting romper or empire-waist cotton dress in a neon hue, and throw it over black monokini for a modern take on seaside glamour.

4. Neon Nails

If you’re really not sure whether you’re ready to take the plunge into brights, just pick a neon shade next time you’re at the nail salon for a pedicure—if you hate it, you can cover it up with closed-toe shoes until you head home to your polish remover.
