Devon's Guide to Spring 2014 Trends at NYFW

  • Black + White

This is such a classic trend that's here to stay—thank goodness! Black and white is all the rage this season and it’s the ultimate chic look that works year-round. Whether you rock black and white in print or solid form, keep the accessories minimal to let the trend stand out.

  • Bold Prints

I definitely saw the bold print trend reoccurring in in the spring 2014 collections I saw. Just check out these prints from Trina Turk. From animal prints to paisley and retro, it’s safe to say you must go big or go home. Rock a snakeskin or cheetah print this fall and transition into florals and geometrics for spring!

  • Denim

Denim shirts (well, denim everything) are ever-present now and all over the place for spring. During Fashion Week, I saw so many combinations of textures and denim—especially at the BCBG show! In this photo from my trip, I’m wearing a fun, lace oxblood skirt to liven up my denim top. This is a quintessentail fall look but trade in my pencil skirt for a mini and it's ready to wear for spring 2014!

  • Graphic Tees

A fun fling (or so we thought) from last season is the graphic tee. And guess what: They're back again and bigger than ever. My favorite way to rock a graphic tee is with a printed bottom. Fashion blogger Sydne rocked this trend in NYC and dressed up her graphic tee with a pair of printed trousers. The graphic tee and printed trouser look works well for both fall and spring. Mix up your layers for fall and soften your colors for spring—it's a win-win situation.

  • All White Everything

All white is always all chic. It was everywhere on the runways! I’m a big advocate of head-to-toe white when you’re careful—no dirtying the suit! Wear all white this fall in heavier textures such as furs, wools, and tweeds. The key to fall and winter whites is to wear a creamy white color. This coming spring, wear a more pure white in lighter fabrics like cotton, chambray, and linen.

  • Necklace Layering

A major jewelry trend the coming spring season is layering statement pieces. From long to short chains, Lulu Frost was ahead of the game with their fabulous jewels. I love this trend becuase it's one you can start incorporating into your fall style right away and look ahead of the game.

  • Bow Ties

I love a good bow tie!  This tie came separate from the top, which I’m a fan of. I suggest purchasing a bow tie to add to your button-downs! It will change the look of the whole shirt. Try this trend now like I did with a blouse and leather skirt and again in the spring with, say, a floral collared dress—so cute!

  • Print Mixing

Ahhh, we can all breathe easy—print mixing is here to stay! Trina Turk did a fantastic job of playing with prints in her spring collection. Take a lesson from this example of her pattern mixing: Keep the top neutral (with a stripe) if you’re adding a patterned jacket and pant. To work this trend into your fall outfits, simply wear darker colors and fall-appropriate prints. I love mixing and matching with animal prints in the autumn. Lighten up the colors and mix in florals, stripes, and soft textures for spring.

  • Drop-Waist Dress

I saw a lot of drop-waist skirts and dresses worn by fashionistas at NYFW—and it looks like they're sticking around for another season! Drop-waist is a difficult trend to wear for some body types, so remember to always tailor! Sydne did a fabulous job of tailoring this dress to her petite frame. Layers such as blazers, structured jackets, and fur work great over drop-waisted clothing for fall, but as the temps rise, ditch the layers and show a little springtime skin. Get it, girl!

  • Turbans

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love turbans—but I haven’t always. I was terrified of the turban trend last season. Once I finally tried it, I was in love. How great does this fashionista caught on the NYC streets look in her pastels and a turban? Fall is a great time to start rocking this trend so you've perfected it by spring. Check out how to style your turban here by my fellow fashion blogger Alyssa!

  • Friends Trend

The fashionable friends trend is always in style. Here I am with my good friends, Rachel in a springtime floral print dress and Emily in a more fall-appropriate leather skirt and sweater. The friends trend is one of the only trends you can wear 365 days of the year and still be a fashionista!
