Fall's Hottest Denim Trends

The Skinny Jean
Embellished, bleached, floral, geometric, waxed, glazed, metallic and everything else in between, skinnies reign this season.

The High-Waisted Trouser
Like them or not, the high-rise trend is showing no signs of wearing out yet. The real beauty of the high-rise is that they make you look inches taller by drawing attention to your waist and by lengthening your legs. You can maximize this effect by tucking your your top and wearing heels. Bonus: they also do away with the dreaded muffin top.

The Denim Vest
Oversized or shrunken, the denim vest is a quintessential layering piece for this season. And unless you’re going for biker chic, I think it’s best to avoid pairing it with black and stick with knits and earthtones.

The Boyfriend Jean
This season, the laid-back boyfriend jean is getting an update. According to the November issue of Lucky magazine, the new cut is “slouchy at the hip, slim in the calves and cropped.” Still casual, but a bit more refined.

The Jean Jacket
From acid wash and cape-like to distressed with Nehru collars, the jean jacket is back in a big way. And with this particular trend, comes an age old question: is double denim a fashion faux pas or an archetype of casual cool? I know that some women manage to really pull off the Canadian tuxedo, but personally, whenever I’ve tried wearing a jean jacket with jeans I’ve just felt goofy. And it can be goofy—remember Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in those coordinating head-to-toe denim ensembles at the 2001 American Music Awards

The Overalls
Somewhere between Deadhead and bohemian cool, lie the overalls. Perhaps, the greatest thing about them is that, depending on footwear and what you do or do not wear underneath, you can easily look either very cute or very sexy. The choice is yours.

The Jean Dress
A strong selling point of the jean dress has got to be that you can easily get by with just one. Wool tights and a turtleneck can completely transform your summer dress into a practical—and adorable—winter ensemble. Plus, you’ll probably look a little like Ali MacGraw, which is never a bad thing.

Whether we’re giving a nod to the past with a high-waisted trouser or looking forward into the future with a structured jean jacket, I’m certain that we’ll be wearing all of these jean trends like they’re going out of style.
