Everyone looks forward to that magical day every year—Black Friday. Retailers can’t wait to open the doors at five o’clock in the morning to a stampede of desperate bargain hunters. Shoppers eagerly roll out of bed in the pre-dawn hours to stake out a place in line and wait for hours in the freezing cold hoping to score that prized deal. Okay, so maybe that’s a little harsh, but this year promises to be especially competitive with desperate retailers hanging on for dear life and consumers with limited holiday budgets looking to save a buck.


Retailers and online resellers are offering lots of attractive-sounding deals, but unfortunately, many of them are more duds than deals. For example, many retailers are selling the Garmin Nuvi 205 GPS for around $120. It’s a good price for a very good GPS, even if it is last year’s model (or the year before that). On the hand, some retailers are, shall we say, unloading the Nikon D40, which was a very good SLR camera in its day, many years ago.


Many shoppers have honed their Black Friday strategies over the years and learned how to gain a competitive edge or just make the experience more enjoyable. For example, with some coordination, family and friends can combine their efforts and communicate via text messages and phone calls to divide and conquer. Some savvy shoppers even scout out stores in advance gathering inside info from store employees.
