New York Fashion Week Fall 2013: '90s Trend Report

One of the biggest trends sweeping the New York Fall 2013 runway shows this spring was a nod to the '90s. That’s right—the layered, grungy, teen-spirited decade is back with a tasteful vengeance. Unlike some of the looks that came out of the iconic Nirvana music era (baggy and torn shirts, anyone?), this modern interpretation is a lot more practical and feminine. Think flouncy dresses (tie-dye and floor length as seen at Rodarte), plenty of layers (black on black at BCBG Max Azria) and punk rock combat boots ready for action. Don’t forget to top your look with a beanie combined with a simple, understated hairdo. The '90s looks from New York runways prove that both grunge and pretty can happily coexist.

Oversized: DKNY

Oversize separates in bold animal prints—like this coat seen at DKNY—harken back to the urban hip-hop looks of yore.
