Shopping for a Cure

I’ve been told to seek professional help when I’ve shopped for a cure in the past—granted I was shopping to cure boredom, dull-wardrobe syndrome, and nothing-fits-itis. It’s easier to justify a retail-therapy spree when it’s actually for a good cause—a real cause. If you can’t get out and Race for the Cure to support breast cancer research and awareness, why not use your athletic shopping talents and lather up, pretty up, cook up, sip up, put your feet up, light up, dress up, eat up, boob up, or heck, rev up for the cure!


Here are a few ways that you can raise some green by shopping pink:


Lather Up for the Cure. Philosophy’s deliciously creamy pink ribbon shower gel can be used as a shampoo, shower gel, or bubble bath. Whichever way you bubble up, you’ll be tickled pink to know that 100 percent of Philosophy’s net profits for this product go to the Women’s Cancer Research Fund.


Pretty Up for the Cure. Wear your support for the fight against breast cancer on your sleeve (with a jeweled pink ribbon pin) or on your face with Estee Lauder’s Pink Ribbon Collection. Pucker up with the feel good lip conditioners in High Gloss lip-gloss, or brush up with a little Goddess Soft Matte Bronzer. A pretty penny (or $500,000 of them) will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.


Cook for the Cure. I like to think I look pretty in pink and I like to hope my cookies will taste a little prettier coming out of a pink mixer. Kitchen Aid has partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help those with a passion for cooking to help others. Pink products include a mixer, kettle, apron, toaster, measuring spoons, and a cute pink baker’s set. Note: you have to register your pink product purchase at cookforthecure.com to generate a donation.


Sip for the Cure. Republic of Tea has partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to create a special edition pink grapefruit green tea just in time for those crisp fall evenings. If you can’t cozy up for a cuppa with your best girlfriends in person, why not send them a tin of pink grapefruit tea (and maybe even a little pink grapefruit marmalade), and the proceeds will be sent to Komen.


Put Your Feet Up for the Cure. Apply Avon’s overnight treatment to hydrate feet and then snuggle your piggies in a pair of cute white socks with a pink trim for added hydration. One hundred percent of the net proceeds are donated to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade.


Light a Candle to the Cure. Pier 1 Imports is donating 25 precent of the purchase price of their pretty 3 × 4" Floral Blossom pillar candle to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. It comes in a frosted glass holder with a flocked flower design and a Pink Ribbon pin. It makes a pretty gift to yourself and a great stocking stuffer (if you can think that far ahead!). Available in stores.


Dress Up for the Cure. Skip the plain white tee this fall and make a statement (literally and stylishly) with this cute shirt by Juicy Couture. One hundred percent of sales will benefit more than fifty charitable programs dedicated to finding new detection methods, treatments and, hopefully, a cure for women’s cancers through the Women’s Cancer Research Fund—so buy one for a friend too.


Eat to the Cure. There’s no sweeter way to show your support for the fight to end breast cancer than with a 7-ounce bag of delicious dark chocolate pink and white M&M’s. Only available online, you can choose from the pre-printed ribbon logo candies or you can create your own message and send a bag of sweets (and a truckload of support) to someone you admire.


Boob Up for the Cure. Give your boobs—and the fight against cancer—a little lift with this seamless lined bra by Wacoal. It has a cute ribbon and pearl detail at the bust, a tonal floral design, and wide straps to support your charitable mammaries. One dollar of every sale will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.


Rev Up for the Cure. If like me, you’ve been waiting for an excuse to buy yourself a BMW, you’ll be delighted to hear that Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) has designed a special edition version of its all-new, eagerly awaited 2008 C350 Sport Sedan to raise funds for Saks Fifth Avenue’s Key To The Cure women’s cancer initiative.
