Someone just asked me this same question a couple of days ago. I toss in all the citrus peels. In fact every now and then we’ll have an orange or grapefruit go bad, and I’ll throw in the whole fruit if I’m feeling lazy or short on time. I haven’t noticed it taking “years” to decompose, but it definitely takes longer than most things. I avoid corn husks and cobs though. Yikes! Those seem to take F O R E V E R .
One thing I really like to do, especially in the winter when the house can sometimes get musty, is save some of my citrus, apple peels and cores, and whatever other fruit scraps I have collected (in the fridge or freezer) and simmer them in water on the stove with a cinnamon stick and a few cloves. It smells wonderful. When it has done its duty I throw all of it in the compost pile.

Works for me. Maybe the no-citrus thing is related more to a worm composting bin than to actual compost piles or bins.

no problem with citrus in a compost, the meat will do better than the peel – another use for citrus peels is a the assemblage of a working potpourri bowl, and citrus peels are a lovely addition there

Hi Van, citris is fine in a compost pile, but it’s best if you chop it up as big pieces can take years to decompose.
