Ageism
It's true, all the women in film are ridiculously skinny. What about age? Except for the mother, or the neighbor, or the doctor (peripheral roles) ALL the central characters are young things. Yeah, there are exceptions. But why are they exceptions and not more of a rule?

Well I think we are looking at age wrong. With medical advances 40 is the new 30. I think its all how you feel and if you take care of yourself meaning, you wear sunscrean and eat somewhat healthy etc. Age is simply how you feel.

I wouldn't call Reese Witherspoon a good actress although I could watch Legally Blonde endlessly and never get tired of it lol. I think Kathy Bates is a great actress but I'm sure her weight and lack of movie star looks keeps her from the big screen most of the time. Scarlett Johannson is a great actress as well. Young, beautiful, and talented as well. The indie film Girl With A Pearl Earring was amazing. Helen Mirren is another example. There are lots of fabulous older actresses in Hollywood. I think the real problem is that Americans are too focused on pointless action movies which offer no real dialog and a storyline that is about as relevant as a porn film. I do agree that Hollywood needs more Bette Davis type of actresses. Her best work came from her older years. She is hands down the best actress there ever was.

I agree that many of the women in their 40's look much younger, but i wonder how many can actually act. i do know one thing, its great to see women that my age grew up with like: meryl streep, goldie hawn and jane fonda still. these are some of the few women from the 60's, 70's and 80's who have actually learned their craft. but isn't it funny that of just these 3 Goldie was the only who's talent was ever questioned? And yet here she is and looking great too! i can only think of one actress today who shows real talent thse days and that Reese Witherspoon. The rest are only for show.

I think many of these 40 year old women in hollywood look closer to 30 or even 20. Those in charge in Tinseltown need to stop dwelling on age and gauge the acting talent of these ladies. It's a damned shame where big Hollywood productions are heading as it is.
