Vietnam definitely is a great option. Thailand and Indonesia are also really cheap and BEAUTIFUL places to visit. Cambodia and Laos are also inexpensive, but may be tough if you're traveling with kids because both countries are still somewhat in shambles. Malaysia's good, but I felt like there wasn't quite as much to see. Singapore is fairly expensive. I would definitely recommend Ho Chi Minh City inn Vietnam, Phuket in Thailand or Bali or Bintan in Indonesia. There's this great website called viewpoints.com that has some really helpful reviews about good hotels to stay at, etc. Here's a link to some hotels in Thailand that people liked. Have fun on your trip!

Vietnam was a freakin' bargain. We typically did not spend 6 dollars on dinner for two, and we were not eating in divey places. Everything but everything was cheap, cheap, cheap - though we did not seek out luxury. It's not for the unadventurous, Vietnam can be kind of challenging, but it's an amazing place to travel and very affordable once you're there.
