Hey Everyone! I’m 21 years old and my husband and I have a wonderful life with our almost 2 year old daughter. Last year (July 2007), I decided to get a tummy tuck because I had the most unsightly problem ever. I was always 5’8" 125 pounds before I got pregnant, but ballooned up to 200 pounds during pregnancy (thanks to my OBGYN who wouldn’t check me for hypothyroidism even after I told him it ran in my family. AND I was on a special diet and still gained weight like crazy..). Anyways, my regular doctor diagnosed me with hypothyroidism (surprise surprise..) last year and I started taking medication. I had lost a lot of the weight (went down to 140 pounds) and I was losing my big tummy, but the skin stayed behind…and not just a little. It was like pizza dough hanging down almost to my crotch. Even though I was and still am planning on having more babies once I finish school, I couldn’t bare to live with my skin the way it was so I went through with an abdominoplasty. My plastic surgeon assured me I would be able to get pregnant again, but I am just hoping to get some feedback from woman who have actually experienced this. Large babies run in my family. Most have been 8 lbs, if not 9 or a little more. I have a high pain tolerance and I’m not afraid of the pain, I just want to make sure that I am well-informed about a few things before I start trying to get pregnant again. My main questions are these:
a) Has anyone had a pregnancy after a tummy tuck where there were complications to the baby (because there’s no room to stretch and grow or something)?
b) What does it feel like when you stretch and grow? (please don’t hold any details back!)
c) And my least important question: What happens to your tummy after you give birth? Did your tummy tuck stay in tact or did you need a touch up after the baby was born? I paid a ridiculous amount of money for an extremely skilled surgeon who specialized in abdominoplasty and my stomach looks perfect, but what are the chances that it will hold through more pregnancies?

I have never read or heard of anything bad happening, and I’ve searched a lot, but I really would feel more comfortable hearing something from women who’ve experienced this. I could never forgive myself if my future children were compromised in any way due to my vanity. This is an open forum, so anyone can post a reply, but I’m mainly looking for women who have actually experienced this, or an OBGYN or plastic surgeon to give me some feedback. Thanks to anyone in advance!

Hi, I’m 37 and had my tummy tuck 8 years ago after having my two boys. After my second my tummy stayed the size of being six months pregnant. People would offer me their seat on the tube and this really offended me (but they weren’t to know, so I wasn’t cross with them). I was told I had a severe separation of my tummy muscles (know as the ‘Recti’ muscles). So I underwent a tummy tuck with muscle repair. In all honesty and with hindsight I think I was so preoccupied and depressed with how I looked I didn’t properly consider whether I had finished having children. For the last few years I have been extremely broody but am so afraid if i have a third i’ll be back to that time again. I couldn’t afford to have the tummy tuck again. I’ve read everyones posts and have found them really reassuring but I soooo want to know what you’ve all experienced once your babies were born. Did your tummies go back to how they were before your tummy tuck? Has anyone had a normal vaginal delivery (I previously had two C sections but really want to try a vaginal delivery if I’m allowed). Please all enlighten me. I really want a third baby but am so scared. |
Hi Bree, My name is Dawn and I am currently 35 weeks pregnant. I had my tummy tuck 5 years ago and never expected to be pregnant again. What do ya know—- divorced, remarried, and now expecting my third child and couldn’t be happier. That being said….. this pregancy has been much more challenging. It took me until about 7 months to look pregnant being that my ab muscles are so tight. Nobody can believe I am 8 months preganant. I certainly didn’t have that with my other pregnancies! I have not experienced any new stretch marks ( WOO HOO!! ) but I am in quite a bit of pain. I would definitely say that I have a pretty high pain tolerance being that I had both of my kids naturally. No drugs, epidural, etc…. but this pregnancy is totally different. I am uncomfortable standing up straight being that my skin is so tight. I have a ton of BH contractions and with each of them do feel like my muscles are ripping. I am absolutely uncomforable but I do feel like the pain is worth the pleasure. It is outright painful and I am a pretty tough chick. I am not regretful of getting pregnant, would do it again, am going to be ok if my tummy isn’t as tight as it was, but just want it to be over. My doc is inducing me one week early as to maintain my tummy tuck as much as possible and spare me from a bit of the discomfort. God bless my OB. I hope you found this helpful and will follow up in a couple of months to let you know how everything looks once I am postpartum. ! I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to rock the bikini with confidence one again! |
Im 28 weeks, 4th pregnancy and had a tt after my 3rd. This by far has been the most painful pregnancy. My stomach feels so tight. Its hard to breath, feels like my muscles are ripping appart. So far no stretch marks. Really uncomfortable after eating. |

How are the pregnancies going ladies? |
hello Bree and anyone else in this situation! I am a 41, had a tummy tuck 4 years ago, and am now considering trying for a baby. I would really love to hear how the pregnancy is until giving birth and how the tummy is afterwards. Is it better than pre tummy tuck or, worse? Interested to know if i should go ahead and get pregnant or accept I have two beautiful sons and be done with it. Thanks in advance, Anita. |
Hi, I am 27 weeks pregnant and 3 years ago I had a tummy tuck. It was hip to hip with major muscle reconstruction. I am 28 yrs old and this is my first child. I have to say I havent noticed anything that seems out of the ordinary so far except for a couple of things. a) I am hardly showing. I have a teeny bulge, I look about 4 or 5 months pregnant and not almost 7 months. I can hide my pregnancy still even. People dont even believe Im pregnant. The doc says its because my muscles were artificially tightened so Im carrying compactly and more internally. The baby is growing normally though and measures within the normal range. b) In the past two weeks, Ive started showing a little and the growth is happening fast. It hurts. I feel uncomfortable. Like I have done a few hundred crunches or Ive been punched in the tummy. Or like I have a stitch in my side that lasts all day. Again, the doc says its because my muscles are having to stretch more than usual because they were artificially tightened. I see my doctor tomorrow and Im going to ask him if its possible that I would need to be induced or have a c-section a week or two early, or if the baby will have enough room to grow to term or lastly, will my “knitted together” muscles be able to get through labor sufficiently. I will post my results. I was told by my original plastic surgeon that I would likely need a revision tuck ONE DAY if this baby grows hugely and the skin doesnt retract. But that remains to be seen. Mostly, I just notice that I dont show very much, in a normal way and that the stretching really does hurt a little. But my OBgyn is happy with my progress so Im just going to keep an eye on it all. Good luck!! |
Dear Bree & other members of the forum… This is G from India. I read your forum and was so greatful that someone posted this que as I am looking answers to the same questions. I have not had ANY children till now, but due to various reasons want to go in for a TT. But I intend to get pregnant in about 1.5 – 2 yrs. Cost is not an issue here. The only thing htat worries me is the incision. All said and done it is a cut in the skin and when you are pregnant the skin stretches there. I was wondering if the skin on the scar / incision stretching will cause any problems ?? I have heard of cases where the where there is a first C Section the second preg may cause mild pain in that C Section incision area. Becos the incision seems to be pretty big and a baby weighing down on that for about 9 months doesnt sound too good… Will it cause hernia or something ??? Any info on this ?? Secondly, I would like to know if you have gotten preg yourself by now and is there anything I should know ? I am yet to have my TT, planning to this weekend… So any info as early as possible will be of great help ! Thanks a bunch… |
