Orange County Gardening
What vegetation and flowers will adapt best to the Orange County climate? Are there certain native plants that will draw the good bugs to my garden and keep the bad ones away?

Winters in orange county are generally temperate. Its a great time to plant trees and shrubs. It is also great weather to plant perennials, ground covers, herbs and roses. Native wild flowers germinate nicely in winter rains as well. Vegetables and herbs like broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, dill, fennel, potatoes, and radishes are great for the cooler winter season.

In the summer remember the basics. Water in the early morning and often. Water your compost heap occasionally to promote decomposition. Also consider putting it in the shade to keep it moister longer.

You know, you should really try a water garden. I have one here, San Jose, just for shiggins and it works great. But, I think in the OC, it would work even better. It's simple to create a compact and easy-to-manage water garden in a single weekend.
