Landscaping DIY

AllyBy: Ally
Trees, shrubs and flowers, where is the best place to put them in my yard? I want to create a beautiful living environment, outside and I know I can do it on my own. Share your tips for building quality structures like fences, sheds and DIY ponds.

Great question, dear. Conceptually, try to create a series of C's with your plants, shrubs, and flowers. Rows and rows. Use basic artistic visual principles such as Natasha mentioned: consistency, balance, and proportion. I'd even add symmetry and subtly. Symmetry to the point that it's pleasing to the eye, but also subtle so you don't think about it, you just enjoy it. Also, subtle meaning that the landscape isn't the first thing you see before you see the house. You want the two to work together seamlessly. When in tandem, a lime green adobe dwelling is accented by classic tulips. A traditional brick home has surrounded by even more classic red roses. It's about matching, not clashing. Also, gaudiness! Beware of gaudiness. And be patient. It takes time to transpose the vision in your head to the grassy canvas. But soon, you'll be scapin' the land all the live long day. Good luck, Ms Ally.

You should start by taking a close look at parks and gardens in your neighborhood that you like. Identify the consistency, balance, and proportions. Notice the use of the plants, garden décor, and landscaping fabric. From there, you should sit down and create a landscaping plan for your garden. It is helpful to select one theme and then decide on main focal points.

You should consider installing water features into your garden. They make a bold and beautiful statement, and really add depth to your garden. Using pre-formed rigid plastic liners, durable pumps, flexible tubing make it easy to create ponds.

Do a lot of research when selecting plants. Make sure you're providing something that will work with each of the four seasons. This way you will be able to have flowering trees and shrubs in the spring and summer, and in the foliage in the fall and winter. You could also consider layering plant beds in 3 rows: a back row with the tallest plants, a middle row with the next tallest, and a front row composed of your shortest plants.
