Car Sales and Politics – A Perfect Combination for Election Day

In the final hours of Election Day, the candidates are battling for every vote. U.S. News and World Report says “They might be able to save some time by checking out the kind of cars voters are driving … what people drive tends to show how they vote.” For example, pickup truck drivers are 3.5 times more likely to be Republicans than Democrats. What does your car say about your own political preferences?


Regardless of whether you’re voting for Obama or McCain, or what kind of car you drive, the important thing is that you start it up, drive it to the polls, and cast your vote. And be sure to leave lots of time for the process, as people everywhere are reporting long lines and extraordinary waits at the polls.


But, while you’re out on the roads today, be extra safe in your car! According to an article at U.S. News and World Reports “Your risk of being involved in a car accident goes up on the day we choose the next President.” MSNBC reports, “ The study found that on average, 24 more people died in car crashes during voting hours on presidential election days than on other October and November Tuesdays. That amounts to an 18 percent increased risk of death. And compared with non-election days, an additional 800 people suffered disabling injuries.” Yikes!


With all eyes waiting to see today’s results at the polls and concerned about the current economic downturn and, many people are definitely watching their pennies. Not too many folk are out shopping for cars, which ironically, makes this the best time to consider making a purchase. Auto manufacturers and lenders know they have to work hard to bring consumers into the dealerships, so many manufacturers are offering special incentives, and most dealerships are offering great financing deals.


U.S. auto sales fell 32 percent last month from a year earlier to their lowest annualized rate since February 1983, according an article at CNNMoney, which states “The declines were seen across the board, for all product categories and all companies, despite lavish incentives.”


“Because of all the uncertainty, consumers are understandably reluctant about plunging into a big-ticket purchase right now,” saysGreg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com.


“Consumer confidence is crushed,” said.Cheri Fleming, the owner of AskPatty Female Friendly Certified Valencia Acura in Valencia, California. She says she has witnessed something she has never seen before because of that fear: According to an article in the New York Times


Customers come in, negotiate a price and even get so far as to allow the dealer to help procure a loan, and then “a lot of times, they just get up and leave.”


Buyers who want to take advantage of this situation would be well advised to shop carefully and research the many incentives currently being offered. MSN Autos has a great website that shows financing options and rebate plans being offered to new car buyers for every make and model currently on the market.


U.S. News and World Reports also has a similar article in which they list the current best deals for the month. Either one of these sites will provide shoppers with detailed information to help them find the very best deal currently available to those looking to buy a new car.
