How to Avoid Blogger Burnout

If you follow the mom blogging community carefully you will probably deduce that the stakes are high and the competition is fierce to become one of the best mom bloggers on the net. Moms are working around the clock to become notables in the mom blogging niche. To achieve “blog fame” it takes a lot of hard work, commitment, and dedication. But as moms we also have a ton of other responsibilities on our plate that render blogging “24/7” a virtual impossibility. Many of us start with the intention of posting every day and connecting like mad women on social networks like Twitter and Facebook, but it most often leads to burnout. Here are three ways to avoid it.


Be honest with your readers. Honesty goes a long way with readers; especially with fellow moms who understand that as a mom yourself you cannot be expected to keep updated content on your blog each and every day. Let your readers know up front that you enjoy your blog and making connecting across the blogosphere, but that your blog doesn’t define who you are and you are certainly not chained to it. That way, you have the freedom to post excellent entries at your leisure as opposed to cranking out mediocre ones every day of the week.

Set your schedule. I recommend posting on a set schedule and combining your blogging with Twitter. That way, on the days you are not posting, your most loyal readers can still read about what’s going on in your life. Determine the days you will blog, whether it’s Monday-Friday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, Tuesday and Thursday or once a week for that matter. It’s entirely up to you. I do not recommend posting seven days a week, however. Look at some of the most popular mom bloggers like Dooce and Amalah. They are great bloggers, but they don’t post each and every day. Posting every day will put undue stress on anyone, especially when it is unnecessary. Remember: you’re authoring a blog, not running a daily newspaper.


Be realistic. I don’t know what your personal goals are with blogging, but nothing should stand in the way of your sanity. When you feel as though you cannot handle blogging any longer, take a brief hiatus to refuel and breathe again. Blogging, especially if you aspire to become an A-List blogger, can become dangerously addictive and can alter how well you care for yourself. Make sure you back away from the computer, your laptop, or your PDA for long stretches of each day and focus on really taking care of you so that you will be the best mom you can be as well as an awesome blogger.
