Humor in the Workplace

We all know how boring, dull, and lifeless it can get in the workplace. Whether you are the only one in an office or sit in a huge room with hundreds of other people in cubicles, the day-by-day repetitive schedule can eventually become dreary and lead to a lackluster attitude.


Using humor can sometimes liven up the atmosphere and give a surge of energy to participants. Used wisely, it can bring a sense of friendliness and liveliness to the room.


Effective humor blends in with the type and style of the workplace, and stays on topic and includes the audience in participation. On the other hand, a joke, which is something unrelated to the specific office or work area, may or may not be appropriate and practical jokes that can be hurtful.


Our topic here is the humor that includes several participants and hurts no one. Almost everyone has a sense of humor, if only deep down. It allows people to view everyday life in all its comical aspects as well as being alert to funny relationships between unrelated things.


Everyone laughs at different events in their lives. That sense of humor enables people to adjust to changes and realize that life isn’t all bad. Humorous events pop up at the oddest times when we least expect it. Those people with an acute sense of humor just seem to notice it more often.


For humor to work and benefit the workplace, it has to be supportive of the workers, appropriate to the particular business, and effective in its topic. It should have a natural, flowing feel that includes those who are involved.


Most people would agree that humor in the workplace can have beneficial effects. Yet not all humor is good humor. The challenge is how to interject appropriate humor and fun into our serious jobs without hurting others or seriously undermining the company. When used appropriately, humor can work for you.


Humor Works When It Uplifts
As many businesses are supporting telecommuting nowadays, workgroups are scattered about. This challenges working relationships and makes bonding and company loyalty difficult. Humor has the power to include employees in a common cause. When you include people in the fun, it simultaneously improves morale, reduces stress, and facilitates team building. The creative use of technology brings employees closer to each other, figuratively if not literally.




Humor Can Bring People Together
Milestones are a natural place to employ humor. Other celebrations to mark holidays, anniversaries, project completions, or similar accomplishments are perfect opportunities to utilize humor. Even surviving certain projects is cause for celebration and fun. Speeches can become silly with skits and spoofs. Look at the occasion from different angles to find the humor. Halloween can be a time for contests to determine best costumes. Each occasion has opportunities.


Humor Works with Ceremonies
Award ceremonies do not have to be entirely dull. Injecting humor occasionally helps to retain interest in the event and leaves everyone feeling good about each other. There are many different ideas available on-line to fit every event. No one likes to attend a ceremony and become bored and sleepy. Inject humor to enliven the group.


Humor Can Include the Unexpected
Pranks and practical jokes do not need to be hurtful. If done with a lively spirit and including everyone, they are less likely to alienate certain people. Human traits, not ethnic traits, can be seen by everyone as funny and take some of the edge off a stressful work environment. If the target is the person initiating the humor, no one is hurt.


Humor Works Because Everyone Benefits
When we make fun of ourselves, it actually demonstrates our healthy outlook, showing we don’t take ourselves so seriously. As a result, we’re regarded as more approachable and down-to-earth. Don’t make fun of yourself excessively, however, because such humor loses its effectiveness with overuse.


When you strive to employ humor that uplifts and taps universal themes, everyone then benefits. It is never appropriate to make fun of someone in the workplace just because they are different, especially when there are so many general human traits that are funny.


Humor Should Not Disrupt Normal Work
Humor is not appropriate when it interferes with normal day-to-day work. Managers expect certain outputs each day in order to continue to keep the company profitable and provide a job for each employee. Humor in the workplace should be in addition to, or outside of, productive work.


Look for humor, don’t make it hurtful, and enjoy each day. The workplace doesn’t have to be so serious that it is stressful. Humor can be effective and can make employees eager to return each day.
