I have a big problem with waste. I can think of ways to reuse packaging materials that people discard. Some of the food packages we trash are super strong, water proof, ultra light, and colorful. These materials can be incorporated into buildings and homes and should not be filling landfills. When a liquid spill occurs I reach for the laundry basket to clean it up instead of the paper towels. The dirty clothes will soon be washed and I can say I saved a tree. Washing my car in the yard instead of the driveway gets my feet a little muddy, but the water is soaked up by the dirt and absorbed into the lawn. No water gets wasted running down the gutter into the storm drain.
Shopping for clothing at secondhand stores really helps to conserve cash and sets me up in retro styles to look good. So what if I don’t look European. I’m not. Drinking coffee instead of soda gives me the caffeine I crave and cuts down my calorie intake and trash output, and coffee is way cheaper than soda. My biggest conservation effort is made in the kitchen when I cook meals from bare ingredients instead of precooked prepackaged meals. These PPMs cost extra money for the convenience and add so much extra too our landfills that they should be outlawed. My home cooked food tastes better than most restaurant food and is healthier and more filling than PPMs, besides there are no preservatives, and I can control the trans fats and other unhealthy items.
To conserve on fossil fuels I don’t drive all the time. The public transit system in my city takes a little extra time and it sometimes sucks waiting for the next bus, but I get outside and must walk some and share the fuel consumption and cost with thirty other people who I can meet and interact with. When I need the convenience store it is a short walk or bike ride away which gives me more exercise and less expense. I conserve more money and paper by reading and watching the news on the internet instead of on newspaper and magazines. We Earthlings are responsible for the condition of our planet and can make the choice to live more conservatively for the health of our bodies and the body of our world.
