I need to get this out!
It may not concern anyone else, but it bothers me.
The government offers help to families in need. These families have come from different walks of life. I know that it is not easy to go to the state and say, “I have no college education, I have a big family, and am finding it difficult to be a provider.” They accept your situation and give you options to better your self and get on the right path so that you as a citizen can pay taxes and maybe help other families that may fall in your shoes one day.
It’s a trap. They offer rent assistance, fuel assistance, food stamps, and work experience programs for those who have no training. You would think that’s great, I can get one foot out of this mess and struggle my way to a somewhat reasonable life. Maybe not perfect, but anything is better than nothing. The fine print is you can never get out. They pay a minimum to the utilities of about eighty dollars a month, maximum rent assistance for a family of seven is $669 a month. They send you to volunteer at the work experience sight for three months to gain possible employment.
I personally was placed at a daycare and have been coming in and hour early and helping in the classrooms as an aid all summer. I was informed that the daycare would be hiring in September. I went in to see if I was being considered for the job, to my surprise I was told, “No have your WEP (Work Experience Program) councilor reassign you.” They were hiring people who had educational background. I am all for whoever best fits the job description gets the job but if we are placed here at no cost to the daycare its easy to send me away and get a new WEP client to replace me as an aid while the well deserving person who studied hard gets the job. My complaint is if I have no other choice but to accept help for a limited amount of time, I find a job at minimum wage and the bills are piling up the minimum payment on utilities only keeps them on doesn’t eliminate the bill.
Okay, so I get a job or two and get off the public assistance program and attempt to be go at it alone. The electric company and gas company wants their money or no utilities. I am talking about a year’s worth of service that was being sent eighty dollars a month; it’s about three thousand dollars, no payment in full no utilities. I thought that if I worked I could save the money to pay then move forward, but you also pay the state back 10 percent of your income for the assistance that was provide to you. If I refuse the help, I’m stuck; if I accept the help, I’m trapped.
