You hear all your life not to discuss religion and politics. They are such interesting topics of conversation, why can’t we talk about them? In my old age, I am discovering why.
I guess I have finally widened my circles of friends and acquaintances enough that I am in contact with people who don’t think the same way I do. I am not that passionate about politics, but I do find it interesting. I am startled at how vehement some people are!
My initial reaction to Sarah Palin was intrigue. I joined a Facebook group in support of Sarah because I thought she was interesting.
I just removed her from my groups, not because I don’t support her, but because I have decided I honestly don’t care that much. The Obama fans are very vocal in their dislike, below is a public Facebook post response I received:
Only a “thinking” woman can see that Palin is a token white girl. PLEASE … you have to help the intelligent women of this country send the message that Palin is liptick on a pig … she’s the wrong choice for a wrong presidential candidate. McCain has jeopardized his election by his knee jerk induction of Palin. She is an insult to women like myself, who believe in choice, privacy from government, that if a women is voted into office she should be more warranted. Shame on McCain. She can never begin to fit in with DC or run our country. Obama/Biden are the answer! Vote for change! MC + W3.
How insulting! Accusing me of not being an intelligent, thinking woman because of a Facebook group? I imagine that if I had joined a pro Obama group I would have received a similar vitriolic response from McCain supporters. Her response did not change my opinion; it only made me not like her very much. In addition to dropping Sarah Palin, I think I will drop this “friend” as well.
I am going back to my usual groups of non-controversial topics such as tennis, books I have read, and college football.
