Three Practical Tips to Achieving Goals

Did you make New Year’s resolutions?  If so, how many of you have actually stuck to your goals so far?  If you have, give yourself a big pat on the back!  According to many experts, it takes twenty-one days for something to become a habit.  Even if you did fall off the wagon, it’s certainly not too late for a fresh start.  So don’t fret. If you’re on a diet but didn’t do very well today, don’t quit.  The only real failure is if you stop trying. 

Three practical tips to achieving goals:

1. Take Baby Steps. When it comes to accomplishing goals, taking baby steps is clearly better than taking no steps at all. Basically you’ve got to keep going a little bit at a time. Break larger objectives into smaller, more manageable tasks. You’ll feel less overwhelmed and will see quicker results.

2. Be Proactive.  Dr. Stephen Covey is a world-renowned speaker and author.  He says “Every human has four endowments . . . self-awareness, conscience, independent will, and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom - The power to choose, to respond, to change.”  In his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Covey lists ‘BE PROACTIVE’ as the first habit.  This requires that you focus your time and energy on things in your life that you can control.  Being proactive is ultimately about you taking responsibility for your life. In other words, quit making excuses for your actions (or inactions as the case may be), and quit blaming others for your circumstances or behavior.  Proactive people work on things they can do something about.

3. Get Organized and Simplify Your Life. Being organized in all areas of your life helps you to find balance and enables you to be more productive.  The more organized you are, the less stressed you are. Whether you need to clean out your closets, get your finances in order or work on improving your personal relationships, getting organized is a key ingredient to achieving success.
