Growing up, most of us Generation Xers were encouraged to be gracious and unassuming when stating our opinions or reaching for that brass ring. Accolades were to be earned and accepting failure was simply part of the deal. We were eager participants and grateful for the opportunity to contribute.
As we matured, we dutifully developed a solid work ethic and in an attempt to "have it all" multi tasked our way into a state of perpetual busyness. This may have impressed a few, but it left us with nothing more than chronic fatigue and an intense yearning to dial it down and start listening to our internal guide. Instead of sitting on the sands of practicality watching the tide come in,we soon took interest in riding the waves and engaging in life on a whole new level.
A noble ambition one would think, until we realized this involves getting our fannies in the water. At times we admit, it feels like we're floating out to sea on a tattered surfboard with only a scant recollection of the doggy paddle. But despite these minor set backs, we are finding our inner voice one stroke at a time and much to our surprise, it is coming through with brilliant clarity and perfect pitch.
Without a doubt, this sets us apart from the Millennials. They seem to have a sense of themselves that was foreign to us at their age. We often scratch our heads and wonder if it will serve them well in the long run. The jury is still out on that one. Only time will tell.
What we can say is that we share a bond. We understand and support one another every step of the way. This pursuit is our call to arms and we recognize it is a profound journey for all of us. There will always be twists and turns in our generation's quest for self discovery and as we continue to navigate the currents of uncertainty, there is one thing we know for sure.
We couldn't be in better company.
COWABUNGA!
