Thanksgiving is one of the rare family gatherings that is not focused around getting something. Easter has the Easter Bunny, birthdays have gifts, Christmas has Santa, and weddings have presents (see where I am going with this), but not Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is truly focused on the gathering. The only thing that people may want at Thanksgiving is another piece of pie.
Thanksgiving is the holiday that is truly about spending time with loved ones—laughing, eating, joking, and enjoying being together. For this reason, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.
I love the colors of the seasons, decorating with pumpkins and pinecones, bringing out the “good” dishes, the smells drifting from the kitchen, and the pies. I absolutely love pumpkin and pecan pies. No other time of the year am I a big pie eater, but it just wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without a piece of pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream. I can almost taste it now.
I know that having lots of people over for such a special dinner can be a little stressful, but don’t let the stress take away from the specialness of the day. Nothing is ever going to be perfect, but that is not what it is about. It is about being together and reflecting on everything that we have to be thankful for. In the hustle and bustle of the day, try not to lose sight of that (and of the last piece of pie) and everything else will work itself out.
Here’s wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving!
