How to Iron-On Transfer

You can personalize everything from T-shirts to pillow covers using iron-on transfers! See our tips and tricks for how to use a print-at-home iron-on to decorate a tote bag.

It's easy to customize just about anything fabric with an iron-on transfer. You can draw your own image and scan it into the computer or find a copyright-free image online. Once you’ve picked out the image you want to use, print it on transfer paper, following the manufacturer's directions. Once the ink is dry, cut out the design as close to the edges as possible. Pre-heat the iron to a high setting. Place the printed image face down on the fabric surface (in this case, a tote bag). Iron the image onto the bag, pressing down hard and constantly moving the iron. Lift a corner to check that the image transferred, and pass the iron over the image a few more times if it hasn’t. Once your image is transferred, peel the paper off and let the bag dry. Just like that your new bag is ready to hit the streets!
