Budgeting Your Trip
Thailand is becoming increasingly popular for travellers with low budgets and high expectations. Flights to Bangkok are getting cheaper, although not as cheap as flying within Europe, the low cost of food and accommodation more than balances out. In fact, a careful traveller could easily get by in Bangkok on as little as £5-10. Eat at the local street stalls, hunt out the local hostels, and you’ll live like a king!
Roasted Bat at Khao San Road
Roasted rats are one thing, but Bangkok’s most popular backpacker destination also serves up healthy and affordable roasted bat. It’s described as being chewy, and tastes a little bit like chicken. Bat is also quite a popular meat in other countries too, where men hunt for them in crocodile-infested waters. You’ll never think of Batman in the same way!

Cod Sperm at Kubpo Hanako
Bangkok has its very own delicacy that puts caviar to shame. It may look like a lump of cold, gone-off mayonaise, but when mixed in with a bit of spicy ponzu sauce, cod sperm is actually quite an experience. Also known as “white children”—which is its Japanese name—this is a meal you’ll be telling your children about for many years to come.

Pig Brain Soup at Samong Moo Thai Tham’s
Ready for a mind-expanding experience? Check out this traditional hole-in-the-wall style eatery, where you’ll be treated to a heart-warming soup of pig brains, entrails and fish skin. Now that sounds like a tasty dish!

Bull’s Penis at Pow Tiem Heng Food Court
Served with traditional noodles, a portion of bull’s penis is said to wonderful things for your libido. It’s surprisingly meaty and not at all un-enjoyable, and it’s definitely a conversation starter. It’s known by many names, perhaps a marketing ploy to make people feel more comfortable when ordering it; Rocky Mountain Oysters, Cowboy Caviar—whatever you call it, it’s going to be a wild ride!

Fried Insects at Soi Cowboy
Soi Cowboy is Bangkok’s neon, red-light district. It’s one of those places where you can find pretty much anything you want, but those in the know come for the delicious fried insects. Treat yourself to a bag of grasshoppers or silk larvae to munch on with your beer. And if you’re feeling a little bit more adventurous (which you probably are) then ask for a scorpion—tail and all!
