It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere: Sizzling Summer Cocktails

Summer is, for apparent reasons, my favorite time of year. Lounging at the beach with your friends on a sunny Saturday, baseball games and barbecues on Sundays ... it doesn't get much better. Oh, wait, yes ... yes, it does. Raise your glasses, because summer is also the season for wonderfully sugary and fruity alcoholic drinks. Here are some of my favorites; what are yours?
  • Sex on the Beach

    Please and thank you. This delicious drink is just what you need to be whisked away to your happy place.


    • 1 1/2 ounces vodka
    • 1/2 ounce peach schnapps
    • 2 ounces cranberry juice
    • 2 ounces orange juice


    Add vodka and peach schnapps to a highball glass over ice. Fill with equal measures of cranberry and orange juice, then stir.


     

  • Strawberry Daiquiri

    This drink needs little introduction and little explanation for why it’s one of my—and everyone else’s—favorites.


    • 1/2 ounce strawberry schnapps
    • 1 ounce light rum
    • 1 ounce lime juice
    • 1 teaspoon powdered sugar
    • 1 ounce strawberries


    Combine ingredients and a bit of ice in a blender. Blend and then strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a strawberry.

  • Raspberry Mojito

    A mojito is the perfect cocktail to experiment with and get your creative (fruit) juices flowing—I hear that the blackberry-pineapple variety is especially satisfying. Add your favorite fruit and impress your summer guests!


    • 1 1/2 ounces Mount Gay rum
    • 1 1/2 ounces lime juice
    • 1/4 ounce simple syrup
    • 2 ounces club soda
    • Five raspberries
    • Five mint leaves


    Pour the simple syrup, mint leaves, and raspberries into a highball glass. Muddle well and fill with ice. Pour in rum and lime juice. Top off with club soda.

  • Margarita

    What’s not to love about this classic? Make it flavored, classic, blended, or on the rocks—or all of the above.


    • 1 1/2 ounces tequila (blanco, 100 percent agave)
    • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
    • 1/2 ounce Cointreau Salt, for rimming the glass
    • Ice


    Rim the glass with salt and then fill with ice. Add tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau. Stir and serve. 

  • Mimosa

    There’s just something about mimosas that makes me smile. It could be their bright yellow color, or the fact that they’re made with yummy orange juice … or maybe it’s because of the champagne. Simple, yet satisfying.


    • 2 ounces orange juice
    • Champagne


    Pour orange juice into a champagne flute, then fill remainder of flute with champagne. Stir very gently and serve.

  • Bikini Martini

    With a name like that, you know it has to be good. Mix one up and commence basking in the sun. (In your bikini … duh!)


    • 1 ounce Bombay Sapphire gin
    • 1 ounce Blue Curacao liqueur
    • 1 ounce peach schnapps


    Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an orange slice.

  • Piña Colada

    If you like piña coladas and gettin’ caught in the rain, then this recipe and Seattle are perfect for you.


    • 1 1/2 ounces light rum
    • 2 ounces Coco Lopez cream of coconut
    • 2 ounces pineapple juice
    • 1 cup crushed ice


    Put all ingredients into an electric blender. Blend until smooth and pour into a Collins glass. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a maraschino cherry. 

  • Cosmopolitan

    What makes you hotter than this little cocktail? (Besides, of course, the sun you will inevitably be lying under while drinking it …)


    • 1 ounce vodka
    • 1/2 ounce triple sec
    • 1/2 ounce lime juice
    • 1/2 ounce cranberry juice


    Shake vodka, triple sec, lime, and cranberry juice vigorously in a shaker with ice. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.

  • Peach Bellini

    If you happen to be in Venice this summer, swing by Harry’s Bar and thank Giuseppe Cipriani for creating this delicious drink. We owe him one.


    • 2 ounces peach nectar
    • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
    • 1 ounce peach schnapps
    • 3 ounces dry champagne, chilled
    • 1/2 cup crushed ice


    Put all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into cocktail glasses.

  • Bloody Mary

    How fitting that you find the Bloody Mary at the end of a slew of alcoholic drinks. Sunday brunch, anyone?


    • 1 ounce Smirnoff No. 21 vodka
    • 3 ounces tomato juice
    • 2 dashes red hot sauce
    • 2 dashes green hot sauce
    • 1 dash Worcestershire sauce
    • 1/2 ounce lemon juice
    • 1 pinch salt
    • 1 pinch pepper
    • 1 stalk celery


    Add all ingredients except celery. Pour back and forth between two mixing glasses. Strain into an ice-filled highball glass. Garnish with a celery stalk.
