It’s that time of year again, when we bid adieu to the beach and the barbecue and say bonjour to sun damage. After the tan (or self-tanner) fades, those pesky blotches and freckles remain…a lovely reminder of those days when we skipped the sunscreen. With flawless skin front-and-center for fall, now more than ever is the time to tackle discoloration. If you’re not genetically blessed with supermodel skin, try this three-pronged approach:

·      Undo. Diminish sun spots by adding a concentrated lightening serum to your skin care regimen. Ever since hydroquinone was banned in other countries for potentially causing cancer, cosmetic companies have unearthed ingredients that brighten skin naturally, such as willow bark, marshmallow root, and vitamin C. They’re gentle yet powerful. (Best Bet: Jurlique Purely White Skin Brightening Essence, $58)

·      Cover. In the meantime, fake a flawless complexion with a long-lasting medium-coverage foundation. Look for one that contains light-diffusing particles, which create subtle luminosity and distract from imperfections. If you’re not a big fan of foundation, mix just a little with your moisturizer for a more natural finish. (Best Bet: Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Hydrating Foundation SPF 10, $42)

·      Prevent. Ward off future damage by wearing sunscreen every day, even if you’re stuck in a cubicle. Over a lifetime, every second of exposure adds up! With the latest whisper-light formulas, there’s no excuse to skip the SPF, and if it’s built in to your moisturizer or primer, you’re more likely to wear it. (Best Bet: NARS Pro-Prime Multi-Protect Primer SPF 30, $30)
