Remember that feeling of joy and anticipation when you opened up a box of brand-new crayons? They looked so crisp and shiny and perfectly lined up, just waiting for you to select a color and unleash your creativity on a clean sheet of paper. I wanted them to stay that way forever, not get all worn down to the nub, with wrappers peeling and the box in shambles and everything out of order. Oh the woes of a seven-year-old … I haven’t used a Crayola in years, but I swear I get just as giddy around the new lip crayons that seem to be popping up like tulips. The love child of lipstick and lip balm, these yummy jumbo pencils are everything you’re going to want in a spring lip color—sheer, naturally pretty, moisturizing, and a little bit shiny. They provide more color than a tinted balm (a beauty product that has always confused me by being super-moisturizing but not tinted enough, or way more tinted than I bargained for in a balm) but less than full-on lipstick, which starts to seem too heavy this time of year. They’re also easy to swipe on without a mirror and so much fun to look—just like the real thing. I dare you not to whip out a giant pink pencil on the subway without smiling.
