New York Fashion Week officially kicked off today, but things got an early start with a slew of events held yesterday.

First up, the 2013 Style Awards, held at the Lincoln Center tents that house many of the week's runway events. At the event, Kate Upton was honored as the model of the year, while designer and Project Runway judge Zac Posen was named top designer. The Style Awards event was swarming with celebs; Rachel Zoe made her first red carpet appearance since announcing her pregnancy with baby number two, Nicole Richie wowed in a stunning black pant and crop top ensemble, and Upton showed just why she deserved her honor, walking the carpet in a beautiful black wrap dress that hugged every curve in just the right way and laughing and posing with the ever-stunning Christie Brinkley.

Wednesday was also Elie Tahari Day, so decreed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg to honor the designer's 40 years of doing business in New York City. Comedian Joan Rivers presented the mayoral proclamation marking the anniversary at an event held at the new Elie Tahari pop-up store on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Tuesday, September 10, Tahari will be debuting his new spring collection dubbed Elie Tahari 1974, which is said to feature updated takes on some of his greatest hits from the past 40 years.

Also Wednesday, actress Hilary Swank presented designer Michael Kors with the Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion for his contribution to the industry at a benefit luncheon held at the David H. Koch Theater in Lincoln Center.
