Quarterlife Skincare: 5 Essentials for Ageless Skin

By the time you reach the ripe old age of 25 or 30, the bad habits of your college days—smoking, drinking, sunbathing, sugar-binging—have already taken their toll on your skin. Good news: There’s still time to undo much of the damage while preventing more from marching across your face.

1.      Add retinol or Vitamin A to your evening regimen. This powerhouse anti-ager will keep fine lines and sunspots a bay and soften any that have already cropped up (they have a tendency to do that). They also have a skin-brightening effect that can’t be beat. Try: Arcona The Solution ($42)

2.      Don’t even think about going to bed without washing your face. The dirt and makeup from the day can clog pores (adult acne, anyone?) and dull skin—not to mention do a number on your pretty pillowcase. If you can’t possibly be bothered with standing at the sink, keep a stash of single-use, biodegradable cleansing cloths on your nightstand. Try: Yes to Blueberries Facial Towelettes ($7.99)

3.      Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. It’s like a 401k match, only instead of free money you get to preserve your youth by simply depositing a layer of SPF 30 on our face every morning. The current BB cream craze makes it even easier. Try: MAC Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm SPF 35 ($30)

4.      But sunscreen isn’t enough. In addition to sunscreen you also need and a protective barrier to defend against free radicals. You also need antioxidants to protect from the free radicals that cause premature aging. A lightweight serum under your moisturizer or sunscreen each morning is no-muss and most are oil-free so work on all skin types. Try Organic Pharmacy Antioxidant Face Gel ($86)

5.      If you can swing it, invest in monthly facials. A good esthetician will set you on a path to your best possible complexion. That could mean regular enzyme peels, extractions, or specific product recommendations suited to your skin type. Find someone you feel comfortable with. Even better, ask a friend or co-worker with really good skin who she sees for facials!
