It’s no longer enough for sunscreen to just protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Today’s blocks do it all: fight free-radical damage, stand in for foundation, stick to wet skin, leap tall buildings…. And I’m not complaining one bit. Summer is hot and busy enough for me to layer on a bunch of products, and sunscreen makers are totally savvy to that fact. They’ve come up with innovative, elegant formulas that are actually enjoyable to slather on again and again. Every two hours to be exact. Here are my four skin-saving favorites:

Aveeno Hydrosport Sunblock Spray SPF 50

How’s this for a head-slapping moment: a sunscreen that adheres to WET skin, so you don’t have to dry off or even exit the pool to reapply it? Genius.

Bare Escentuals SPF 30 Natural Sunscreen

The last thing I want to do for a mid-afternoon stroll is mess up my makeup by adding a layer of liquid sunscreen. This mineral powder block protects while blotting away mid-day shine.

Becca Mineral SPF Primer

This is a perfect product, and I don’t make that claim lightly. It is sheer, smells amazing, is 100 percent natural, contains a potent cocktail of anti-aging antioxidants, and keeps makeup in place all day. I know makeup artists who won’t leave the house without it, and I totally understand why.

Coola Mineral Face Tint Rose Essence SPF 20

Everything comes up roses when I use this delicately scented, beautifully tinted organic block. It’s lightweight yet leaves a flawless veil of natural color and protection. On a super-hot day, this is the only thing I put on my face.

Supergoop! Sunscreen Swipes

I have a love affair with towelettes—particularly when they contain a normally messy product like sunscreen or self-tanner. When Australia’s cult-favorite water-resistant brand came out with these wipes, I knew they’d travel everywhere with me.
