On Saturday September 29th at 10pm, HBO Boxing is featuring a match well worth watching. It is the long anticipated showdown between Middleweight champion Jermain Taylor and dangerous young challenger Kelly Pavlik.
I have been a martial artist and boxing fan for over thirty five years, so my interest in this fight is nothing unusual. However, there are interesting subplots; which makes this fight well worth seeing, for you sports minded ladies and readers of Divinecaroline.
Jermaine Taylor is from Arkansas, earned an Olympic Bronze Medal, and since winning the middleweight title from Bernard Hopkins on July 16th 2005, as developed into an excellent fighter. He is also a personal friend of former President Clinton, himself a fan of boxing. Jermaine is undefeated with a record of 27-0-1. However, recent lackluster performances may have tarnished his image as the premiere sports hero of Arkansas.
It is my prediction, that after this Saturday, we could very well have a new, exciting middleweight champion. Kelly Pavlik is, at the age of 25, one of the most exciting fighters today. He is a spectacular knockout artist, with devastating power, and displays good boxing talent. He is from Youngstown, Ohio with a record of 31-0-28, with 28 knockouts. I am really impressed with this young man. In my opinion he represents the best of young America. I really want him to win.
Here is a young man, who is fighting for middleweight championship, yet takes his meals at home with his parents. His Dad, a no nonsense, former steel worker has instilled in this young man, focus, maturity and a humility, which is very rare, among todays youth. The fact that a young man like Kelly, allows his family and traditional hard work values, to be the total focus and direction in his life, is a refreshing thing to see. What a contrast to most fighters today, who love to show off their wealth, cars, rings, money etc, often coming to the ring to the gyrations of some hip-hop artist.
I like what Kelly’s trainer, Jack Loew, stated earlier last week, “if you make a habit of doing the right things consistently, good things will happen.” That is an incredibly profound statement! It has taken me nearly 52 years to understand the importance of that frame of mind.
I think in this fight, Kelly Pavlik has a chance to become a fantastic role model. To show young people, that determination, work ethic and the ability to enjoy the simple things in life will always pay off. That, is the main subplot of this fight. This is a free televised event, which I encourage all boxing fans to enjoy.
