In addition to providing inspiration for many Halloween costumes this year, Britney Spears serves another purpose in the lives of us ordinary Americans—she makes us feel superior. I may not be the best mother, but I do buckle my kids in their car seats. I have done some embarrassing things in my past, but at least I never shaved my head and then attacked a car with an umbrella.
And now, we can feel superior to Britney in yet another way. She is obviously a complete idiot when it comes to managing her money. According to reports about the court papers in her custody dispute, she doesn’t save or invest any of her roughly $737,000 monthly income. I earn less than that (only slightly of course), yet I still manage to put a little aside.
And I thought I ate out way too much (See Is Your Family’s Food Bill Out of Control?), but I’ve got nothing on Britney, who reportedly spends $4,758 per month dining out. She must be ordering some extremely expensive cocktails and appetizers. Add in another $49,267 in mortgages for two houses, $16,000 for clothes, and $102,000 on entertainment, gifts, and vacation—and you’ve got one out-of-control pop princess!
So while most of us Americans are still spending too much and saving too little, at least we now know there is someone out there making stupider financial choices than we are.
